In 2003 Donald Rumsfeld estimated a war with Iraq would cost $60 billion. Five years later, the cost of Iraq war operations is over 10 times that figure. So what’s behind the ballooning dollar signs? Joseph E. Stiglitz and Linda J. Bilme’s exhaustedly researched book, “The Three Trillion Dollar War: The True Cost of the Iraq Conflict,” breaks down the price tag, from current debts to the unseen costs we’ll pay for years to come.

nice animation, but the voice over is awful. I thought I would fall asleep!! real monotone….

  2. yannique Says:

if its COSTS are the americans’ reason to stop the war, there is WAY more wrong with that country than i thought..

  3. betterversionn Says:

it always amuses me when conservatives rail on and on that welfare is to BLAME for poor gov’t spending! This concept of hand-outs is born and then vilified, while they have seem to have no problems with the fact that every time in the past 25 yrs that the GOP “reigns” in office, the deficit soars and we have record dept. Also seem to have no prob w/the doubling of our national debt in a matter of only 7 1/2 yrs. AMAZING-always AMAZING. “IT’S THOSE DAMN LIBERALS!!” lol! they always cracks me up

  4. Iseeyoursoul Says:

    This is amazing!

  5. crowsonguy Says:

What a shame: great research, high priced ad agency on the crime and waste or war; but this film HAS NO EMOTIONAL IMPACT. Go back and start again, guys.

  11. Ashtwan Says:

    That’s for damn sure.

  12. HolyMotherofGrid Says:

The REAL cost of war is not measured in $s and cents, but by what it does to the spirit of the nations involved. Wars ALWAYS involve atrocities and horrors on both sides, which diminish and poison the spirit of everyone. Any time humanity is divided into “us” and “them” factions, this is a cause of sorrow and suffering, and an impoverishment of the spirit of all those who either participate, or behold.

  13. Alxmty Says:

That’s why we should vote for a president who will stop the war and take away the US troops from Iraq!… Obama 08!

    1. Trillion dollar rumor is a huge stretch from the truth. 2. Arn’t you Republicans advocating an indefinite stay in Iraq?

  17. geralw0512 Says:

oops the amerecans are in trabbel

  18. celinenj08 Says:

wow that’s a lot for 3 trillion and to think Obama is going to spend 1 trillion just in stupid government programs we don’t need. Really puts it in perspective. Obama is whacked out in his economic views and he’s going to break/kill our economy. His economic principles have never been tried or proven. He is wreckless and is only doing it to get elected. Selfish gain.

    1. Trillion dollar rumor is a huge stretch from the truth.
    2. Arn’t you Republicans advocating an indefinite stay in Iraq?

  20. sharkiexpert Says:

I totally agree with you… but I think once that good side/bad side distinction has been made, the “other” is percieved as evil and is subhumanized, so its possible for a nation to turn a blind eye from any atrocities committed in war. It almost seems necessary at this point to appeal to the monetary aspect to get people to look at the war in a more negative light.

  21. sharkiexpert Says:

    —> HolyMotherofGrid

  22. HolyMotherofGrid Says:

Sadly, i perceive you are correct: war has many costs, but many folks do indeed turn a blind eye to the more intangible ones which they think do not affect their daily lives. When you put the monetary costs in front of them, sometimes it shocks them into thinking about the other matters. To think of all the things which could be accomplished with 3 trillion dollars, completely boggles the mind.

  23. onanisten Says:

all that money used just to kill people… makes you think…

  24. Xaviec Says:

three trillion dollars!!! my god what kind of administration do you have “Americans”? and all of you think you live in paradise? no tienen idea

  25. jimmyphack Says:

all worth it for the taliban fuck the bastards its their fault we’ll just have to kill them faster, dont like america you can fuck right off.

  26. novazee Says:

Make love, not war, condom is much cheaper than guns..

  27. YouTellMeGG Says:

Man its sad to see people like you coming from the “land of freedom”. What happend to America it was so cool in the 20th century? Now you’r just bullying the poor nations in the world. America’s war is against the taliban but now the countries citizens seem to hate everyone of different colour and origin. I mean your war isn’t against the world is it? People are afraid to come to the US because of how people there are behaving at the moment. No one hates the US, its quite the opposite.

  28. jimmyphack Says:

im from the land of reality, fucking canada, you know something worse then the war and this taliban, immigration we now have terrorists who were born in canada the news says ‘ a man from the muslim community’ canadian born man they call it. you know the political correctway so they dont get sued.attempting to bomb parliment there is a canadian born man from the ‘muslim community’ who threw a grenade at a US soldier while ‘visiting’ afganistan. we can pay all the police and they cant protect us.

  31. ibilldavis Says:

    NOBAMA

  32. daackmpoy Says:

about people hating the U.S. im not so sure. its not the people its the goverment so then the people to for not stoping them in their race to destroy countrys and steal oil; and the capacity of some U.S. citizens to be fooled by everything the light-emmiting box says. I ont believe anyone hates U.S. citizens theworld hates what your goverment does

  33. pikmindoctor Says:

Certainly the taxpayer looses money,But these politicians are getting plenty of backhanders from oil companies and money from selling weapons to the ‘Iraqi security forces’Certainly in Afghanistan I bet they’re selling a lot of weapons in that region.Britain is just as bad, apparently we’ve knocked the US of it’s position of country that sells the most weapons - some Labour government Brown and Blair turned out to be! Our government is more American than ever!

  34. 66redballoons Says:

America has been bullying small countries since Vietnam. Blame our corrupt/corporate influenced government, not us. I have a different stance on Afghanistan though. I know a bit about it’s recent history and what the Taliban has done to that country. I know we’re not doing a fantastic job right now, but nothing could be worse than the Taliban. Besides, pulling out now would mean making the same mistake we made in 1989 after the Soviets left..

  35. aleminkrali27 Says:

lets chatwant to do it all night long with me? baby come see me xoxo. Ea

  36. viewtiflmee Says:

well it’s not a fucking romantic comedy, right? my guess is that it wants to be informative and have an intellectual impact, holy shit, man what would you like to see there, apart from numbers and facts? some fucking dog puppies?

  37. thepoison1627 Says:

tho i agree that we should get rid of the Jihad, taliban, and terrorist groups, the US is doing nothing by going into Iraq first of all,the nations with Jihad &terrorist groups are ALL OVER europe and alot of Asia & Asia Minor second,we are not getting rid of the Jihad as the jihad has little power over Iraq the nations we should be attacking to get rid of the Jihad would be Iran,Europe,Japan,Saudi Arabia,China,India,Turkey, and many others but that would make the US look bad so they went for iraq

  38. jimmyphack Says:

the saudi’s run canada, through ‘human rights commisions’ sponsored and paid for by, none other then the saudi’s, Mosque’s targeting young black canadians to recruit for a canadian terrorist unit. SPONSORED AND PAID FOR BY THE SAUDI BASTARDS. saudi arabia now thats a war ill join.

mm… dont be sosure.. the resident as always and everywhere is just a public face, a puppet, controlled by someone with power and bigger goals than ruling a country is more like slaving the world (like all big bankers do)

  43. Guncriminal Says:

Yeah, Brown and Blair seem to be intent on selling guns to everyone except their own people.

  44. iesuck Says:

If you guys calculate war that way, then why isnt anyone talking about how much medicare, medicate and social security’s total cost? Look it up, its almost 40 Trillion dollars.

  45. iesuck Says:

I dont think I can make love when extremist are trying to kill innocent people.

  46. ballinfem Says:

bored woman here, can someone here help me?

  47. ballinfem Says:

bored woman here, can someone here help me?

  48. cl3atis Says:

But don’t we kind of need those things? How much do we really need this war?

  49. cl3atis Says:

Who’s the extremist? We have killed over a million people, mostly civilians. A small group killed 3000 civilians. If it takes over a million innocent lives for us to feel safe and secure then maybe it isn’t the rest of the world that needs to change.

  50. Longlivepalestine Says:

    Cl3atis - Great reply.

  51. filosophydude Says:

you know what the real problem is? the guys making war decisions are benefiting from the war…this war would never have happened if the US president and vice president risk having their private bank accounts emptied for emptying Uncle Sam’s bank accountThe war would never have happened if there is a real possibility that Bush & co. can be held accountable for the death of Iraqi civilians.

  52. AngloPhantom Says:

Word’s can not express my anger at my own government for having anything to do with this war.

  53. mrocean468 Says:

  66. discoveramericanow Says:

it is a lot of money, but I notes soemthings, i.e. does not the money from making all the war supplies and replacement costs pump money back into the economy?

  67. blakmira Says:

War is a racket. The People are the ones who are forced to pay for it through taxes. The corporations who supply weapons, etc. are contracted by the Department of Defense and can go years with tax-exempt status while becoming rich. No, it does not “pump money back in the economy.”

  68. feeknocks Says:

more than three trillion dollars, the government will leave a huge scar on america for decades to come. just imagine if government had stayed limited, how powerful our economy and advanced our society would have been. sigh. that is the real damage.

  69. discoveramericanow Says:

Yes war can be a racket, but who makes war materials? planes, tanks, etc. if made in US, workers are paid, spend and pay taxes. During our economic crisis, expect more people to volunteer for military. They too will spend money, no?Please provide backup for what military companies are tax exemp ans who are not.
